5:49 pm - another meme or “elect me it’s my birthday”
And another meme thanks to [info]divisionbyzero.

This is for Nov. 4th.

Go to Wikipedia and look up your birthday (excluding the year). List three events, two births and one death in your journal, including the year.

Events
(lots of presidential elections: 1869, 1952, 1980. Always thought this meant I should run. After all, the campaign slogan of "elect me it’s my birthday" is better than most slogans!)

1869 - The first issue of the scientific journal Nature is published.
1924 - Nellie Tayloe Ross of Wyoming elected as the first woman governor in the United States.
1979 - Iran hostage crisis begins: Iranian radicals, mostly students, invade the United States embassy in Tehran and take 90 hostages (63 of whom are American).

Births
1470 - King Edward V of England, one of the two princes in the Tower
1916 - Walter Cronkite, American news broadcaster
1946 - Laura Bush, First Lady of the United States(!!!! Had to add this one. Does she fit with the “sex symbol of the zodiac” thing? Umm…I don’t think so)

Deaths
1980 - Elsie MacGill, Canadian aeronautical engineer (b. 1905)

This at school... about to go now...

5:31 pm - Okay so where are the women?
Yes, this is yet another quiz I have taken. But I totally blame this one on peer pressure. All y'all are doing it (I just used all y'all in sentence... maybe it is time to move back north), so why can’t I?

But I must admit a certain lack of respect for this Quiz. What about the women? Granted there were not many clear female force users with names, but we do know the force was strong in Leia, and probably in Darth Vader's mum (there a bit of British to balance out the southern), and there were female Jedi. But maybe this is more of a problem with a certain director then with this quiz??? I want more women Jedi!

6:57 pm - Where the Wild Things are
My Rule #23809743: Kids should not be allowed to run wild in coffee houses. Fast Food restaurants—Fine. Grocery Stores—ok. “Family” restaurants—fine. Play Grounds—perfect. Their own houses—even better. But coffee houses? It should be illegal! Coffee Houses are for studying, working, or quite conversation, or even quiet games.

I went to my local coffee house today to get some grading and other work done. I was sitting pleasantly in front of a nice little fire grading away and in walks the man, woman, and kid. Now I’m not too good at ages, but I’d say he was about 4. And the parents allowed him to run wild. They didn’t even bring anything for the poor kid to do. And they sat at one of those bar style tables with the tall chairs, so there was no chance the kid could sit and join them. Both the adults sat down and read the silly little papers available for free at the coffee houses. The kid found the toys at the coffee house and managed to run around with the toys, dropping them at every opportunity. And I mean every. I’ve never met a child with such a liking for gravity in action. I think it was part of the “game;” at least I hope it was. The kid was making so much noise that I heard him over my iPod, background noise of such places, and the house’s own music. And his parents did nothing. He made SO MUCH NOISE! He ended up “sword” fighting with this older guy with these weird plastic things that fit together—that is unless they are used as swords and then pieces fall off whenever there is contact—so with each swing. At one point both parents actually left the coffee house without the kid. Granted they just went to their car, but who leaves their kids alone like that in a public place? Some people should lose their parenting licenses and be “dealt” with. GRRRRRR

I thought my new userpic was appropriate for this post ;)

12:38 pm - Greetings from Chicago!
Greetings from Chicago!

Hello, just a quick greetings to all y’all from Chicago.
I saw snow today. The height of all excitement I know (well at least for me, the “southerner” in exile from the northeast).

I’m at a conference, well sorta at two. One ended Wednesday and the other is ongoing. Probably I should say the height of all excitement, at least for today, was not the snow but the fact a big name in the field, with whom I have been working with on a committee, invited me to join her and an even (debatable) bigger name in the field, to co-author a book on research! YIPPPPEEE and big professional wow. I think this makes my current projects ~=n. No joke. People keep asking “what are you working on now” and I can’t even list it all. After a while their eyes glaze over.

But I had drink in the Stanley Field Museum last night. Very cool—drinks and dinosaur bones. What more can you ask for? Besides snow and book projects?

Well without the time or concentration for more notes on my very good and professionally-forwarding conference experiences, I shall leave y’all. Does not sounds like a good week for some of you. I’ll comment later, like when I am back in the land of spring (and my TULIP!).

11:16 pm - I’ll take ideas
Okay, so this is becoming a place for me to post silly quizzes. Probably pretty boring you the rest of you. I’ll admit I’m having problems figuring out what to put in here. I don’t have the time or the inclination to do daily postings on my life, as this well shows. My “real” blog is the place where I do more of my life and thoughts stuff. But what do I do here? I thought of following [info]tenner’s “ask me a questions and I will answer truthfully idea” (which was from [info]princesskaite--cool idea!). But that would be one or two posts where I respond to the questions. I thought of discussing my progress on my Dragon*con costume, but no progress has been made, and I might post that to the “real” blog. I could drag out the question idea. Maybe one post per question, kinda a chain thing. I answer one question and people can post comments asking another question or for more details.

Or...
I am open to suggestions. Thoughts? Ideas? Demands to stop doing quizzes?

10:49 pm - I am, apparently, quite the vain catch!
Dating StrengthsDating Weaknesses
1. Intelligence - 71.4%
2. Open-Mindedness - 63.6%
3. Appearance - 62.5%
4. Financial Situation - 61.5%
5. Confidence - 61.1%
1. Vanity - 58.3%

Dating Strengths Explained
Intelligence - Your sharp intellect is a valuable asset. Use your intelligence wisely; avoid condescension. Quiet, confident intelligence is very attractive.
Open-Mindedness - You are open to trying new things and entertaining new ideas, and this widens your pool of available men.
Appearance - Despite what some will say, appearance matters in dating. You get high marks on appearance. Just make sure you balance it out with other qualities.
Financial Situation - You've got your financial situation under control, which is a very desirable quality. Be careful to avoid men who are only interested in your money.
Confidence - You are sure of yourself and confident of your abilities. Displays of confidence go a long way when attracting a date.

Dating Weaknesses Explained
Vanity - Learn to put a lower priority on looks. Appearance is, of course, important, but vanity is undesireable. The only people you will attract are the superficial.

What Are Your Dating Strengths and Weaknesses?

So I guess [info]bruhsam is superficial huh?

I wonder why I came across as vain. Self-confident maybe, but not really vain (well I don't think I am), especially about my appearance. Not that it matters, since I am perfectly happy with the Mister. ;) But I guess it’s good to know I still have what it takes.

5:53 pm - Tears & Swirling Raspberries: My life & Shuffle
A Fun Meme from [info]justducky2204 via [info]psychowoof

Put your music player on shuffle. Press play for each question. Use the song title as the answer to the question. NO CHEATING.*

How am I feeling today? “Mourning” – Portishead [huh…]

Will I get far in life? "Taking over me” - Evanescence

How do my friends see me? “A Thousand Miles” Vanessa Carlton

Where will I get Married? “Square One” Coldplay

What is my best friend's theme song? "Joining You” - Alanis Morissette [interesting]

What is the story of my life? “Everything Will Be Alright” – The Killers [huh, that doesn’t sound so bad…]

What is/was highchool like? “Fumbling Towards Ecstasy (Junior Boys Mix)” - Sarah McLachlan (this is a remix of Fumblin, off of Bloom) [Ha ha very funny! And it even fits, some]

How can I get ahead in life? "Virginia” Tori Amos

What is the best thing about me? “Cloud on my Tongue” Tori Amos

How is today going to be? “Radiowaves” - Eric Serra (5th Element Soundtrack) [that about fits]

What is in store for this weekend? “Whitness” -Tori Amos [that doesn’t sound good]

What song describes my parents? "Waitress” – Tori Amos [my shuffle seems to be in a Tori Mood. Too bad it wasn’t “Librarian” (not that that is a song, but she does have a librarian album) that would fit]

My grandparents? “I dream of Rain” –Sting [well my gram was an artist, but I don’t remember any rainy paintings]

How is my life going? “Nightswimming” – R.E.M. [dark & wet? Maybe this relates to my rain wanting grandparents]

What's my dancing song? “I know” – Save Ferris [not too bad]

Song to sing to? “Children” R. Miles [no fair, there are no words to this song! Can I switch my dancing and singing songs?]

What song will they play at my funeral? “Raspberry Swirl” –Tori Amos [not so bad, as long as no one knows what it means ;) ]

* like psychowoof I skipped Christmas songs

5:43 pm - theme song? Too funny!
I was looking at blogs today and I found this theme song quiz. I thought “what the hey… I like quizzes (some might say I am addicted to them). I like songs. In fact, I have a theme song. Let’s see what this says.”

And this is what it says…..

7:05 pm - My highly Ironic (and annoying and frustrating) Morning
Today was one of those days, and this morning certainly one of those mornings. I woke up with readings for 3 classes left to do (some crazy person [well me] decided that teaching 2 independent studies in one semester was fine on top of her regular teaching load. If this crazy person ever does this again you have my permission to beat sense into her—literally if need be) and zillions of other things. I had to leave a 9:00 am to assure making it to my 10:00 office hours. I got the readings for one class done, and the readings for another class started and well mostly done. My M&W are hectic. I have about 20 minutes for lunch, if that, and I often just bring snacks and eat a snack during my office hours and then after my classes. But today I knew I was going to be doing my independent studies after my regular classes, so I brought my lunch and figured I’d skip out of my office for a short bit during office hours and microwave it. Nobody ever comes to my office hours anyway… to get to the good stuff )

12:29 am - I be Rain!
Since I love the rain, I thought it cool that it is my weather personality. I especially am enjoying the Georgia rains (and they are frequent and go from the lightest mist to the torrential downpours) after living in the semi-arid West Texas town of it-only-rains-in-June-and October-and-you-are-just-as-likely-to-get-mud-falling-from-the-sky (What happens when it rains during a dust storm? Mud!). Go Rain!

6:14 pm - another quiz!!!
Yes, yes, I know another quiz.

I thought this one interesting because of the result. It shows my education I believe (the foundation in pomo feminist thought). And [info]bruhsam will likely groan.

You scored as Postmodernist. Postmodernism is the belief in complete open interpretation. You see the universe as a collection of information with varying ways of putting it together. There is no absolute truth for you; even the most hardened facts are open to interpretation. Meaning relies on context and even the language you use to describe things should be subject to analysis.

9:24 pm - Far too much about little 'ol me
I recently realized I had no entries posted to my LiveJournal blog that were not friends only. So I thought I’d change that. And what better way then telling whoever wants to read this far too much information about me?

Recently a friend email me with one of those "Getting to know your Friends" emails with lots of questions. So I filled it out, sent it back to her, and then, in a slightly edited form, here it is. [Do note that I did not change the numbering, so when I cut things out I didn’t renumber anything. What can I say? I can be lazy].

BTW: want the dirt? The best stuff is posted friends only.
